You’re A Jerk If You End Your Sentence With A Period
Think about how you would type a text when you’re angry. Do you put a period at the end of every sentence or word? For example, ‘K.’ This is exactly why you shouldn’t end your sentences with a dot. According to a 2016 study, using full stops, periods and all types of “proper” punctuation in text messages are insincere.
To be fair that is the proper way of writing, right? But here’s what they argued.
The researchers from Binghamton University reported that ending text messages with a period seemed less sincere because the people sending them are heartless.
The report wrote, “Text messaging is one of the most frequently used computer-mediated communication (CMC) methods. The rapid pace of texting mimics face-to-face communication, leading to the question of whether the critical non-verbal aspects of conversation, such as tone, are expressed in CMC.”
While period is used grammatically to indicate that a sentence is complete in formal writing, the period use in texts adds a rhetoric meaning.
Besides that, the research found that poor punctuation and over abundance of punctuation marks or letters are alright in texting as it conveys certain tones and emotions. For example, ‘soooooo’ or the irregular use of punctuation(!!!).
Ahh, this totally makes sense! Remember how writing in caps lock are perceived as SHOUTING or YELLING? YAAAAAAAA! So the next time someone corrects you on the way you text, show them this.
