WTF, Lana Del Rey Just Name Checked A Bunch Of Female Artists!
Fans of Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and more female artists are coming for Lana Del Rey after she posted a very lengthy Instagram post—the singer commented on being accused of “glamorizing abuse” with her music, but received backlash for comparing her music to other female artists in her message.
Lana Del Rey has a new album coming out, and the follow-up to 2019’s Grammy-nominated Norman Fucking Rockwell! singer just confirmed that her new album will be releasing this coming September.
Buuuuttt, before she went to confirmed the news, she defended herself against critics who criticized her works for ‘’glamouring abuse’’ and expressed her frustration with, ‘’Female writers and alt singers saying that I glamourize abuse when in reality I’m just a glamorous person singing about realities of what we are all now seeing are very prevalent emotionally abuse relationships all over the world.’’
Can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money, or whatever I want without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorizing abuse?
The thing is, people had no issue with Lana wanting to use her voice to sing about whatever she wants. However, the backlash came from her reference of specific female artists, which their fans did not think was necessary. Many of them also pointed out that all of the artists who Lana mentioned have received criticism for work they’ve put out, too.
Lana blatantly ignoring the criticism Beyoncé, Nicki, and other black women have received (and continue to) for being confident in their sexuality doesn’t sit right with me. Commercial success hasn’t made them exempt from misogynistic attacks masked as constructive criticism.
