We Found The Best Way To Check If Our Hair Is Healthy

Too frizzy and too dry, that’s every girl’s hair problems. No matter how many expensive hair products we use, it seems to still be bad, maybe even worse. Turns out this could all be solved if you only knew your hair porosity level.

If you have wavy, curly hair but the curls somehow looked like overcook Maggi noodles, this could be the reason! ‘

What’s hair porosity?

It basically refers to your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture/hydration in its cuticle layer. Hair strands are made up of multiple layers that determine how much water and ingredients are able to penetrate and lock-in moisture. Knowing your hair porosity helps to determine what your hair seriously needs and what it most definitely doesn’t.

How to test your hair porosity? Do the floating hair test

All you need is to take one dry, clean, oil-free strand of hair and drop it in a glass of room temperature water. Wait for five minutes.

  • Low porosity – hair floats and doesn’t sink
  • Medium/normal porosity – hair sinks slowly
  • High porosity – hair sinks quickly

Low porosity

Hair cuticles that are close together (low porosity), repels water and products. Hence, making it harder to moisturise your hair. Plus your hair takes a really long time to completely dry out.

How to care: Use lightweight formulas, wash your hair once a week with clarifying shampoo to remove impurities and go for steam treatments to open up the tight cuticles.

High porosity

But if your hair porosity level is high, which means your cuticles are super raised and open, they’ll lose moisture fast. Which is bad too! Your hair looks dry, dull and gets tangled up like nobody’s business!

How to care: Since your hair is great in absorbing moisture when wet but loses it immediately when it dries, your hair routine involves ultra-moisturising cleansing conditioners and leave-in conditioners.

Medium/normal porosity

You want to have medium/normal hair porosity as it absorbs just the right amount of moisture to keep your hair healthy and shinier. You don’t even need a lot of products to make your voluminous.

How to care: Your hair is in perfect condition, so all you have to do is focus on maintaining your moisturised hair. Slow down on heat treatments and colouring or your hair may change into high porosity. You do not want that!
