We Are Officially The Burnout Generation, Thanks Bosses

It’s official, millennials are indeed the burnout generation. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), burnout has been recongnised as a legitimate occupational diagnosis.

Burnout was added under the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) during the World Health Assembly in Geneva, which took place from 20th – 28th May for the 11th revision of the health handbook.

What is Burnout Syndrome?

The syndrome is defined into three dimensions which are:-

  • feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
  • increased mental distance from one’s job or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job
  • reduced professional efficacy

Definitely more than just Monday blues! Taking a look at Japan, the working hours usually range up to 80-hours a month and some even up to 100 hours of overtime, which leads to karoshi. It is a Japanese word that refers to people dying from spending too much time in the office, literal translation – death by overwork.

In China, Alibaba founder, Jack Ma recently caused a stir for encouraging employees to work from 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week, he calls it “996”.

But Malaysians are also experiencing the burnout, over-working culture. We spend more time at work than we do at home and when we do go home, work comes along. With WhatsApp texts from bosses to meeting unrealistic deadlines, it’s impossible at times to have a work-balance life.

Know that burnout differs completely from you being lazy and incompetence at work. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you could be suffering from the burnout syndrome.

Sekiranya anda telah mengalami gejala gejala ini, silalah ambil cuti dan rehatkan minda. Fenomena "Burnout" boleh memberi kesan kepada kesihatan fizikal dan mental.#mentalhealth #PHM
