Challenging The Bloody Stigma With This Period Jewelry Collection
In today’s bizarre news, looks like period blood are currently taking fashion into the next level.
Periods are often stigmatized especially in Asian countries. Till today, there are some of us who are still shy to talk about their menstruation.
Hoping to change the stigma on this natural process, British designer Lili Murphy-Johnson did something nobody would have thought in a million years, which is by designing and producing a line of period-inspired jewelry collection.
On her site she said, “My collection is inspired by menstruation and the frustrating, leaking female body.”
Scrolling through her website, you’ll see a pair of white panties, decorated with red, shiny beads in what appears to be “blood”. There’s also pictures of ruby-coloured rings worn on a finger that’s cupping a woman’s crotch as well as a simple gold bracelets with charms that looks like tampons, sanitary pads and feminine deodorant spray.
In an interview with Huffington Post UK, she said, “Women in adverts are celebrated and admired when they’re in underwear or dresses and have makeup on and their hair styled. However, if that women is visibly menstruating, I think it would change a lot of people’s perception of her, even though it is a very normal thing for a woman’s body to do.”
Currently, there are three collections which consist of ‘Period Paraphernalia’, ‘Blood’ and ‘PMS’, which are all handmade. Period Paraphernalia is more towards charm bracelets, sanitary towel rings. While the blood collection consists of embroidered knickers and shirt – “Laila’s Flower” and “Overspill”. As for the PMS collection, it includes the bouncing ball necklace shown in the picture above.
