This Grandma Makes Realistic Barbies That Were Literally All Of Us In Quarantine

A 56-year-old grandmother from California has gone viral for her super relatable “quarantine Barbies”. What started out as a fun hobby for her to do with her granddaughters in quarantine has now taken the internet by storm. Tonya Ruiz, a speaker on body positivity, has often used Barbie as an example of unrealistic body standards when she travelled for talks. Upon retirement, they became playthings for her granddaughters. However, given what they were meant to be for, Ruiz was hesitant about allowing them to play with them and for them to be exposed to the dolls’ unrealistic beauty standards. So, she decided to reimagine the dolls to reflect more accurate representations of them. Speaking to “Good Morning America”, Ruiz bought Barbies from the store and made her own miniature props, backgrounds and even personalised boxes for each doll from items she found at thrift stores and garage sales.  She says of the project,

“I wanted to show my granddaughters Barbies are not just about the shoes. It’s more about real life and family and realistic things.”

And honestly, the attention to detail is crazy!
