The Safest Way To Get A Tan Without Burning Your Skin

For those of us who aren’t blessed with the sun-kissed bronze goddess glow, we’d opt for a tanning sesh every time we hit the beach or the pool.

Most of us had the unfortunate experience of red, sunburned skin alongside our bikini tan lines, but fake tans aren’t exactly the best alternative either. We’ve seen too many comedies where the fake tan turned someone’s skin orange and blotchy.

Since every skincare advice out there tells us to stay away from the sun and apply lots of sunscreen, how is it possible for us to get a tan without burning our skin? Well, we’ll tell you how.

1. Apply the right amount of SPF

Slather a generous SPF 50 all over your body, and remember to reapply every 2 hours (if you’re gonna tan longer than that). SPF 50 filters out 98% of UV rays, which is the best filter you can expect in the market, like Nivea Sun Protect & Moisture SPF 50. Meanwhile, if you’re using some form of tanning oil like Banana Boat Dark Tanning Oil With Carrot Extract, please slather some SPF onto your skin first, despite the fact that the tanning oil may already contain SPF. This will help prevent your skin from burning but does not affect your ability to tan.

2. Understand your body’s ability to produce melanin

Unfortunately for fair-skinned babes, your body will reach a point where it can’t produce any more melanin, so it’ll be pointless to lounge around in the beach all day. If you have fair skin, it takes typically two to three hours before the cut-off point. Until then, you’re free to bake in the sun. For a healthier tan, take breaks from being under the sun by seeking shade under a beach umbrella to reduce the risk of getting sunburned.

3. If your skin does burn…

Oops! So you’ve stayed out in the sun for too long and you’ve started to feel the burn. Go indoors, immediately and avoid any more exposure to the sun. Apply aloe vera gel, like Miseoul Aloe Vera Soothing Gel, all over your body to moisturise and soothe burned skin, and also increase cell turnover to heal your damaged skin.

You go, girl! Get that bronzed goddess glow without the hassle of sunburn for your next beach vacay.
