Over the weekend, allegations that ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ and ‘Divergent’ actor Ansel Elgort sexually assaulted a 17-year-old immerged on Twitter. The since-deleted tweet with the allegations was titled, “my story of Ansel Elgort,” and it detailed the young woman’s experience with the actor, who she says she connected with via social media five years ago.

“I was sexually assaulted a couple of days after I turned 17. I was only f****** 17 and he was in his 20s. He knew what he was doing.”

The alleged victim with the twitter handle ‘@itsgabby’, explained that she had dmed on Instagram him two days before her 17th birthday and the actor responded with his private Snapchat account. And while she didn’t expect a response from him, she started talking to him on Snapchat. She doesn’t detail when exactly the assault occurred but she says that she happened “a couple of days after I just turned 17”, that “sobbing in pain” and had to mentally disassociated herself during the alleged incident.

So when it happened, instead of asking me if I wanted to stop having sex knowing it was my first time and I was sobbing in pain and I didn’t want to do it. The only words that came out of his mouth were, ‘We need to break you in.'”

She also alleges that Ansel Elgort had gone as far as to ask her for nude photos and suggest that the two have a threesome with one of her dance friends, who was underage at the time. Along with these statements, she included a photo of what is meant to show her with Ansel Elgort, though her face is partially blurred by her hand. She states that, right now, her focus is on healing. Gabby revealed that she is now going to therapy, to deal with the aftereffects, PTSD and anxiety.

“I’m not posting this to ‘clout chase’ because I simply don’t care for that. I just want to heal and I want to tell other girls who have been through the same s*** as me. You’re not alone.”

On Saturday, the 26-year-old New Yorker took to his Instagram account to address her allegations – and he insists that their relationship in 2014 was consensual.

Ansel Elgort expressed his surprise and distress having seen the news circulating on social media. He wrote,

“I was distressed to see the social media posts about me that have been circulating in the past 24 hours. I cannot claim to understand Gabby’s feelings but her description of events is simply not what happened. I have never and would never assault anyone.”

In his short statement, he admits that he met Gabby in New York in 2014, where they had a “brief, legal, and entirely consensual relationship.” However, the actor does admit to reacting negatively to their separation. He claims that he “did not handle the breakup well” and instead, choose to stop responding to her.

I know this belated apology does not absolve me of my unacceptable behavior when I disappeared. As I look back at my attitude, I am disgusted and deeply ashamed of the way I acted. I am truly sorry. I know I must continue to reflect, learn, and work to grow in empathy.”

It turns out, the age of consent in New York is 17-years-old. What this means is that in New York, it’s illegal for someone age 18 or older to have sex with someone who is under the age of 17, even if it was “consensual sex.” Those who break New York’s statutory rape law, commit a felony and face a prison sentence.

And, as for the allegations that he asked for nudes and threesomes, ‘The Baby Driver’ star did not address them.

After the news broke, people have taken to commenting the number ’17’ on his Instagram photos with his girlfriend and high school sweetheart, ballerina Violette Komyshan.

Ansel Elgort has spoken about his relationship with Violetta, including how the two broke up in 2014 before reuniting in 205. He has also once told The Times that he wants an open relationship with Violette. However, in Elgort’s version of the open relationship, he would remain sexually loyal to Violetta but would be free to fall in love with other people. Ansel stated,

I’m in love with a bunch of my male friends, who I’m not interested in having sex with, so why can’t I put the desire to have sex with women aside and let myself have love with women? I love Shailene Woodley and we never had anything sexual and that was great. There will probably be some sort of chemical thing at some point that you can’t help, but you just have to be disciplined and not be a f*****… We’re primitive beings.”

Ansel and Violetta’s relationship doesn’t seem to have changed after Ansel’s surprising revelation but we have yet to see a response from her about Gabby’s allegations.
