Switch To Sulfate-Free Shampoo & Avoid Coarse Hair
Writer: Farah Karim
Ever scanned the ingredient list on a bottle of shampoo? There are sooo many hard-to-pronounce terms on the label that even reading it can cause a major headache! However, there’s one ingredient in particular that can cause a stir: sulfates.
According to Shani Francis, a board-certified dermatologist and hair loss specialist, she says that “Sulfates are harsh chemicals in many personal health products that are used primarily as foam makers and cleaning agents”. But what exactly are they?
Labeled as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, it’s used to help de-grease strands, dissolve oil and give the shampoo the foamy quality that we’re all familiar with, BUT sulfates are drying to the hair. In extreme cases, they might even irritate the scalp and damage hair cuticles. Ouch!
However, even if sulfates are bad for you, maybe it’s not bad for everyone. If your hair is on the oily side and requires daily washing, then any regular shampoo is fine. But, if you have naturally damaged or dry hair from using heat on a daily basis, then a sulphate-free shampoo is a good idea to add into your regime.
If you’re wondering where to start, then look no more because we’ve listed down some products that are sulphate-free!
