No two couples are the same, and no relationship is without it’s ups and downs. Fighting with your significant other is the very last thing you want to do, but arguments are almost inevitable, and you’re bound to fight at least once a year.
Making up after a fight can be quite scary – most of the time, you wouldn’t know what to do, or if your partner is willing to make up. But someone’s gotta do it.
Whether it’s a petty fight or a full-blown argument, here are the best ways to make up after a fight with your partner.
1. Be the first to apologize
OK, this may sound hard, especially if it wasn’t entirely your fault, but being the first to apologize isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s actually a sign of love. You’re able to put your ego aside and take accountability for your actions. Not everyone is good at this, and you may be afraid that your partner isn’t going to accept your apology. Most of the time, though, you’d get an apology back, and forgive each other.
2. Be affectionate with your partner
After a fight, you may both require a ‘cool off’ period, which is when you both take time and space to process your thoughts. If you or your partner need some time off, it’s better to give space. See when is the best time to be affectionate with your partner – there is no right or wrong answer for this. Give your partner an affectionate hug or kiss, sometimes this may work better than a verbal apology.
3. Discuss the issue, and (if you can) move past it
It depends on the issue, really. If it’s something that can be fixed, or if it was petty in the first place, you can both agree to move past it and forget it ever happened. If it’s a more serious issue, like financial matters, work together to find a solution that you’ll both agree with. However, not every argument will have a solution – the important thing is that you don’t hold a grudge towards each other. Although holding a grudge may be good for you, it’s best to keep it in temporarily and resolve the issue there and then.
