Remembering Sushant Singh Rajput: 5 Facts About The Late Bollywood Actor

The Bollywood community was rocked with the news that actor Sushant Singh Rajput had passed away. As one of the most prolific new actors on the Bollywood scene and with 9 awards under his belt, he was on his way to making his name a household one. His rise in fame from the shy and demure ‘Manav Deshmukh’ in Zee TV’s ‘Pavitra Rishta’ to becoming one of the most sought after actors in Bollywood was a testament to the fact that if you dream big and work hard, the universe will make it happen. Who was Sushant, the small-town boy with an almost fairytale-like transition to a Bollywood star?

Here are some facts about the late actor:

Rajput is the youngest of four siblings.

Sushant was born in Patna, while his family hails from Bihar. His father worked as a government official while his mother passed away in 2002, when the actor was 16. Sushant also has three other sisters, with one being state-level cricketer Mitu Singh. The ‘Kai Po Che’ actor was open about devotion to his mother and had even penned an emotional poem about her on Instagram. His last IG post before his passing was dedicated to his mother.

Rajput was multitalented – we’re talking dancing, martial arts, and more.

The 34-year old star was meant to graduate with a degree in Engineering from the Delhi College of Engineering. However, while doing his degree, he also enrolled himself in dance classes conducted by renowned choreographer Shiamak Davar. During this time, Sushant met other dancers who were also taking acting classes with Barry John (a British-born, Indian theatre director and teacher). From there, he took an interest in acting and the rest is history. As a result of his participation in the film Raaz 2, the actor also took up martial arts. Sushant’s experience with ballet and his love for movement in both dance and martial arts lent him the physical agility and flexibility that not many actors had at the time.

His passion for astronomy is fueled by his high IQ.

Sushant’s passion for astronomy was no secret. His Instagram account has multiple postings about planets and the universe.  But his passion is said to be fueled by his experience with physics. The actor ranked 7th in the country in the AIEEE exam, a national exam conducted for engineering students. He is also said to have won a National Olympiad in Physics. To supplement his passion for astronomy, the Bollywood actor owned a telescope and a Boeing 737 Fixed Base Flight Simulator.

He was well-loved by actors and the Prime Minister of India as well.

After his passing, actress Priyank Chopra – Jonas shared a sweet message for her friend. Other celebrities who shared their condolences include Bollywood star, Akshay Kumar, who shared:

“Honestly this news has left me shocked and speechless. I remember watching #SushantSinghRajput in Chhichhore and telling my friend Sajid, its producer how much I’d enjoyed the film and wish I’d been a part of it. Such a talented actor…may God give strength to his family.”

And Homeland actress Nimrat Kaur also wrote,

“Absolutely gutted and heartbroken for Sushant and his loved ones and family. Really can’t believe his journey’s ended on this untimely, devastating note. Praying for his soul…gone so soon.Yet another horrendous jolt for our industry. So deeply tragic…#RIPSushantSinghRajput.”

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also addressed the news of the 34-year-old actor’s passing, tweeting,

“Sushant Singh Rajput…a bright young actor gone too soon. He excelled on TV and in films. His rise in the world of entertainment inspired many and he leaves behind several memorable performances. Shocked by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Amongst the celebrities who have spoken up, is actress Kangana Ranaut, who spoke about a big issue that’s come up following the late actor’s passing. In a video she posted on her Instagram, the actress slammed the media for the way it’s handled Sushant’s passing and the Hindi film industry for not recognising the actors work in film. She captioned the post,

“If celebrities are struggling with personal and mental health issues, the media should try and empathize with them, rather than making it difficult for them.”

On the 14th of June, Sushant was found unresponsive in his home in Bandra, Mumbai. Investigations are still underway, however, the late actor was suspected to have been suffering from depression. We wish nothing but love, strength and light for his family and friends as they go through this difficult time.
