#MEGXIT Update: Meghan Markle & Her Husband “Stepped Back,” Now What?

After #Brexit, the U.K. experienced a different type of exit this year – the first one of the decade.

Nevertheless, we can assure you that #MEGXIT is probably one of the most unforgettable, historical event ever. Even Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wax figures have been removed from the Royal family display at Madame Tussauds.

Since #MEGXIT happened, what’s next in store for the couple who “stepped back”? We’ve got the answer to some of your burning questions.

Are they still royals?

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA

The Queen was understandably upset and hurt by the couple’s decision to part ways with the royal family. According to The Cut, Meghan and Prince Harry and did not consult other royal members about their withdrawal.

This doesn’t mean they’ve completely renounced their royal titles, though. Technically, they’re both still working members of the British royal family, only now they will have the option to be financially independent.

The now-regular royal couple will no longer receive money through the Sovereign Grant, which funds the British monarchy. By giving up access to the fund, the Sussexes will be allowed to earn their own income.

According to the New York Times, Meghan and Harry were pretty influential as a couple – the royal wedding in 2018 alone generated £1 billion in revenue for the British economy alone. They’ll probably come up with something together.

Kate’s birthday drama

Unfortunately, the pair chose to announce their split with the royals on the 9th of January, which was Kate Middleton’s 38th birthday. The Duchess of Cambridge looked as stunning and elegant as ever, despite royal drama.

The previous week, she managed to spend some time with her friends at Norfolk to celebrate her birthday. Meghan and Prince Harry made sure to wish her a happy birthday on Instagram, though!

How will the Sussexes deal with the press?

‪This evening The Duke and Duchess of Sussex accompanied Her Majesty The Queen and members of @TheRoyalFamily to the annual @RoyalBritishLegion Festival of Remembrance. This special event, which has taken place every year since 1923 at the @RoyalAlbertHall, commemorates all those who have lost their lives in conflicts.‬ • ‪This year’s Festival marked the 75th anniversary of a number of crucial battles of 1944, with a particular emphasis on the collaboration and friendship of the British, Commonwealth and Allied armies who fought them. A unique tribute was given to acknowledge those involved both past and present, culminating in a special parade of some of the last surviving veterans who fought and served in 1944.‬ • ‪Their Royal Highnesses, who last year attended their first Festival of Remembrance together, were honoured to once again pay tribute to all casualties of war and remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.‬ ‪#FestivalOfRemembrance ‪#WeWillRememberThem‬ Photo © PA / Royal British Legion

British tabloids have been aggressively harassing Meghan Markle at any opportunity, even before the announcement of her engagement to Prince Harry. Moving forward, the couple has opted out of the Royal Rota system, which permits the press to access royal information and events.

The couple will connect with the media by engaging with grassroots media organizations and young journalists. They will also permit access to “credible media outlets,” and share information to the public through their official communication channels.
