[BREAKING] Search For Glee’s Naya Rivera Shifted To Recovery Operation; Rivera Presumed Dead

Yesterday, Ventura County Sheriff tweeted that there was a possible drowning at Lake Piru, a reservoir located in California. Lake Piru is known by locals as being a place with “unpredictable currents and whirlpools” that have reportedly caused the deaths of swimmers in the past.

However, before they could confirm the identity of the victim, TMZ reported that “Glee” actress Naya Rivera was missing after her 4-year-old son was found on a boat – alone.  Now long after, the Ventura County Sheriff twitter account confirmed this news. Deputies say they had found 4-year-old Josey (Hollis Dorsey) on the boat alone, with Naya’s lifejacket was still there. Josey, when questioned, proceeded to tell the Deputies present that Naya had jumped into the water but had yet to resurface. In records obtained by CBS News, the sheriff’s office confirms that Naya is familiar with the lake, having been to it in the past, and had rented a pontoon boat for herself and her son. Not more than three hours later, the boat Naya had rented was found by another person boating on the lake. When Naya’s boat was found, Josey was asleep and Naya was nowhere to be found. The boater alerted the authorities, with search and rescue operations underway not long after. However, search and rescue had to be called off once darkness set in.

At present, Josey is reported to be with his father, Ryan Dorsey. The DailyMail has shared photos of the young boy with his father, who is said to have rushed to Lake Piru after hearing that his son was found alone. Upon speaking to Dorcey’s housemate, the DailyMail confirmed that Dorsey was unaware of Naya’s plans to make the trip to the lake. Naya Rivera shares custody of 4 year old Josey with fellow actor Ryan Dorsey. The couple were married in 2014 before divorcing in 2018. Naya’s last post on her Instagram account was a sweet photo of her and Josey, captioned, “just the two of us.”

From 2009 to 2015, “Glee” presented us the complicated character of Santana Lopez, who turned out to be more than a cheerleader-turned-gleek. Not only was the character a person of colour but, she was also gay. This complex character was well-loved, in part for her character development and also, because of the amazing talent portraying her – Naya Rivera.  She’s gone on to play Blanca Alvarez in “Devious Maids”, appeared as a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and played  Collette Jones in “Step Up: High Water”. Naya’s “Glee” costars have joined family and fans alike, as they pray for her to be found safe.

Vanessa Lengies (Sugar Motta), Dot-Marie Jones (Coach Beiste) Lauren Potter (Becky Jackson) and Iqbal Theba (Principal Figgins) also shared reactions online.

Jackée Harry, who guest-starred as herself on a season five episode of “Glee” and worked with Rivera on the show “The Royal Family,” spoke highly of the actress.

As of yet, the authorities involved have shifted their operations. From a search and rescue, the efforts to find Naya is now a recovery mission. The authorities are presuming that the 33-year-old has now passed. Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Dyer said that the change of direction was not indicative of a lack of effort to find Naya.

It kind of changes the title in a sense. We’re presuming that an accident happened, and we’re presuming that she drowned in the lake.”

During a press conference yesterday, authorities also ruled out foul play, citing surveillance footage showing only Naya and Josey getting onto the rented boat. However, there is no surveillance footage of the pair coming back to the dock. With minimal visibility, the search for the young mother has resumed with over 80 people involved.

#FindNaya is currently trending on Twitter as more and more people join in the prayers for Naya. We continue to hope that she is found safe and sound and soon to be reunited with her son Josey.
