Aquarius (January 20 – February 18):

AcroYoga

This relatively new form combines acrobatics and yoga. Aquarius, an air element,  governs from your knees to your ankles and the overall circulation of blood. What better to get the blood pumping than with AcroYoga! AcroYoga allows you to create a better connection between your mind and your body – which suits Aquarians as they have big dreams and ideas that they need their body to cooperate with to manifest into reality. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana) – Aquarius symbolises the transition from past to future, thus, the bridge pose. This pose helps to strengthen the lower back, neck and shoulder muscles.

 

Pisces (February 19 – March 20):

Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga is meant to help you relax your mind and body at the end of the day (or at the start for day-long relaxation). Pisceans are more emotionally inclined, with higher empathy and the ability to tap into the feelings of those around them. This also means that they are more prone to putting others before themselves. In practising restorative yoga, Pisceans are able to refresh themselves; to free their mind and heart from their otherwise emotionally led days. With fewer poses and more props (blankets, pillows, etc.), you will be able to flow and enveloped in a blanket of relaxation.

Fish pose (Matsyasana) – Appropriately named, this pose will allow you to open up your opens the chest, throat, and abdomen (areas that physically react to emotion). If you regularly practise this pose, you will be able to reduce fatigue and anxiety.

Aries (March 21 – April 19):

Hot Yoga

Formerly known as Bikram yoga, this form of yoga features a sequence of set poses in a sauna-like room—typically set to 105 degrees and 40% humidity. This is perfect for Aries people, as they love challenges and goals; they tend to take them head-on with their boldness and energy. Not only that, because Hot Yoga includes a sequence of a series of 26 basic postures (each one performed twice), focus is placed on proper alignment. Ares rules the head, meaning that they are prone to headaches and overthinking. This form of yoga will allow you to focus on the task at hand, allowing you to let go and move more than you think.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20):

Hatha (Iyengar) Yoga

Hatha is the umbrella term for the different types of physical yoga; Iyengar yoga is one of them. Hatya yoga is generally seen as good for beginners as you are exposed to the classic yoga breathing techniques. Iyengar yoga specifically is focused on detailed and precise movements, with poses held for longer than usual in order to adjust the minutiae of the pose. This is a great yoga style for the hard-working, grounded bull to encourage balance and unity within the mind and body, allowing for those under this sign to absorb the steady, patient nature that is necessary for them.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20):

Vinyasa 

As an air element, Gemini controls the hands, arms, lungs and nervous system. Vinyasa yoga is designed to link movement through one’s breath, by connecting the movement through a flow from one pose to another. Vinyasa happens to be the most athletic yoga style. Gemini engaged as they are prone to taking unnecessary risks that could harm them and the people around them – this form of yoga will give them an appreciation and understanding of flow in all forms. Being intelligent in nature, this will challenge them and keep them curious.

Eagle Pose (Garudasana) – This pose is a good mix of playful and challenging. While being interesting enough for them to take on, it is also good to help stabilise the energy of the easily distracted  Gemini.

 

Cancer (June 21 – July 22):

Yin Yoga

This slow-paced style of yoga is perfect for the Crab that is drawn to safe, nurturing spaces. This practice of yoga is a blend of seated postures that are typically held for any time between 45 seconds to 2 minutes. Because of this, it is also seen as meditative yoga meant to help release tension from the body and draw you back to inner peace after a day of chaos. Cancers, sensitive beings, will be allowed to move in ways that will help them feel connected and Yin Yoga would be just the thing to do that.

Child’s Pose (Balasana) – This pose allows for the Crab to retreat, take shelter and regain its balance without completely going back into its shell. It allows them to get closer to the earth, thus giving them a sense of home.

Leo (July 23 – August 22):

Power Yoga

For a Leo, the heart, spine, upper back and forearms are most sensitive. This fiery sign almost always resides in the ambitious, courageous and determined of people. The only way to bring out that fiery passion? Something that is faster, hotter and more vigorous – Power Yoga. With little rest in between, this challenging style will encourage conscious breathing and feed their hunger for new challenges at faster rates.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga translates into the “Eight Limb path” (attitudes toward our environment; toward ourselves, physical postures, restraint or expansion of the breath, withdrawal of the senses, concentration, meditation and complete integration). It also works on linking your breathing to movement. The earth element of Virgo controls the central nervous system, spleen and intestines. They can benefit from practising this form of yoga as it allows the Virgo to balance their strengths of fairness, their fierce love and their patience. It demands meticulousness, detail and organisation, all virtues that they value.

The Boat (Navasana) – There are different variations to this pose, but it strengthens the very part that it has influence over – the core.

 

 

Libra (September 23 – October 22):

Hatha Yoga

Similar to the Taurus, Libras also benefit from the slow pace that Hatya yoga takes. Because Libras’ are all about that balance, they will be able to accomplish their need for serenity and beauty in practising Hatha yoga. It is the only sign that is not represented by a living being and thus, will find the strength and flexibility attained in this class refreshing for their diplomatic and sensitive nature.

Yin yoga is perfect as it is seen as the practice of surrender. Because it requires you to stay in the position for longer periods of time, it’s passive nature allows for more flexibility and increased energy.
