Experts Confirm That Women Need More Sleep Than Men

Or perhaps… don’t rise. Press that snooze button and give yourself a good snuggle in bed, because experts have finally confirmed that women need more sleep than men.

If you need a little nap in your daily schedule, science is on your side. Here are the reasons why women need more sleep than men.

Women need an average of 20 minutes more sleep than men

Sleep is a time when our brain heals itself from whatever we have been doing throughout the day #adulting. Professor Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, explained that women are more prone to multitasking.

“Women do a lot at once, and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater.”

Women tend to be light sleepers and have disturbed sleep patterns

It’s not about the quantity of sleep, a.k.a. the hours, but the quality of sleep means a lot too. Women tend to be light sleepers and have more disturbed sleep patterns. Factors like pregnancy, childbirth and menopause can affect a woman’s quality of sleep. For example:

“Mother’s minds are sensitive to the sound of their baby crying, so they often wake up when their child stirs – yet a man sleeps through it.” –  Professor Jim Horne

Women have more hectic schedules

More often than not, women constantly sacrifice sleep and leisure time, especially wives and mothers, to make sure that their families are happy and attended to. While some people can manage a nap on some days, women tend to be the ones running errands, like paying the bills or doing laundry, when it’s supposedly a time for leisurely activities.

“Employed mothers tend to get less sleep. They also have much less free time – that might be called “pure” free time that is not spent in charge of children or combined with some unpaid domestic activity like folding laundry.” – Suzanne Bianchi, sociologist
