Everyone Seems To Hate Your Boyfriend. Now What?
Relationships are hard enough, and you don’t need a bunch of haters to make it harder. Unfortunately, due to protective family members and friends, you may have an unexpected issue. What if they hate your boyfriend?
Just when you thought it was love at first sight, your loved ones are telling you to stay away from him, and giving him the cold shoulder. What’s a girl to do?
If everyone seems to have a seething hatred for your boyfriend, and you’re finding yourself at your wits’ end trying to keep up with your relationship and your relatives, here’s what you need to do.
Re-evaluate your relationship
Can you see yourself happily attached to this guy in the next five to ten years? Relationships don’t have to least forever but they’re supposed to be meaningful, and you should find mostly joy in being with your boyfriend. If your answer is “yes.” and you do see a future with him, then go for it. Otherwise, it’s probably time to break up. There’s probably an underlying reason that you don’t see a future with him anyway.
Ask yourself “why do they hate him?”
There must be a reason why they dislike him and it could possibly be valid. Maybe he’s a slob or maybe your friends can see that he treats you badly. If you’re already unhappy with him, then you can probably guess why. However, if your friends and family hate him because of a racial or prejudice issue (but you still love him with all your heart, though!) they you need to tough it out. Maria and Tony tried to even out the prejudice issues, and look at how that ended!
If you want to proceed with this relationship, be prepared
You’ll bear the brunt of the hate, because they probably won’t communicate with him directly but will project that hate onto you. Also, be prepared if the relationship ends, because you’ll probably hear a myriad of “I told you so” from supposedly well-meaning people. Sometimes, your boyfriend won’t be able to understand why your friends and family hate him, so you need to be honest with him, but also remind him that you love him despite all that.
Most of all, listen to your heart
Life isn’t a Disney movie, but sometimes, you need a little bit of Disney to make your life bearable. Listen to what your heart is telling you. Sometimes, intuition can be a surprising thing. If your heart is telling you that going on with this relationship despite the odds is the right thing to do, then it’s probably telling you the right thing. After all, you only find your true love once. Your friends and family will come around… eventually.
If you’re facing a tough situation like this, please don’t think it’s the end. Perhaps they have a reason to hate your boyfriend, and perhaps they don’t. It’s your call, really.
