Don’t Be Like Cardi B With These Painless At-Home Waxing Tips

If you follow Cardi B – rapper, songwriter, television personality, actress, presidential candidate 2021 – you know that she’s all about that “no holds barred” attitude and we’re living for it. And on Sunday, the 27-year-old posted a very loud, very dramatic video of herself getting a bikini wax and…

First of all, why is she out there getting a bikini wax? There’s a pandemic going around and people be social distancing. Second of all, is she getting this done in a public salon? And while we can’t discern if this is an at-home wax or out in a salon, her bikini wax turned birthing session has given us ideas.

Now that we’ve been inside for almost 40 days, it may be time to pamper ourselves with a little self-care.

The Benefits of Waxing

Forget the stupid notion that women should be hairless 24/7 and we are unattractive with hair – yes, there are people that think this. We’re all beautiful and whether or not you wax/shave/epilate/choose to be au naturel, how hair you are is definitely NOT a measure of how beautiful you are. Instead, the only reason you should opt for hair removal is if it makes you feel more comfortable in your own skin. After all, you’re the one living in it. And waxing can be the better way to do so because:

1. Ya’ll, it means you don’t get any cuts or bruises! It can be frustrating when you want to solve one issue only for it to cause another and shaving is a fine line to walk. If you’re not careful, you end up with anything between small cuts to skin (rather than hair) removal.

2. It’s so much better than shaving because it gives you smooth, stubble-free skin. Waxing removes the hair from the root and thus, leaves you with clean and clear skin.

3. When waxing, you’re not just removing hair but you’re also removing dead skin cells. The wax gets rid of the top layer of dry skin and leaves you with smoother skin than before.

However, ngl, it is a lot more painful than shaving – as proven by Cardi. But, not everyone has the same reaction to waxing, some can handle it better than they can threading and some may find it unbearable. So before you sign on to your salon waxing package, why not try it at home? Here are three homemade wax recipes that don’t require purchasing wax strips off the bat and are made from natural ingredients that will not harm your skin –

1. Sugar Wax

What you need:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • Popsicle stick/anything that you can use to spoon out & spread the wax
  • Cotton/ Cloth strips

2. Sugar, Honey & Lemon Juice Wax
What you need:

  • Brown sugar / regular white sugar – 1 cup
  • Raw honey – 2 tablespoons
  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice – 1 tablespoon
  • A microwave-safe bowl
  • A spatula
  • Some cloth strips

3. Sugar, Honey & Chocolate wax

  • Brown sugar / regular white sugar – 1 cup
  • Raw honey – 2 tablespoons
  • 10 to 20 grams (g) of organic cocoa powder.
  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice – 1 tablespoon
  • A microwave-safe bowl
  • A spatula
  • Some cloth strips

As for how to use these recipes, the prep and application are the same for all:

  • Combine all ingredients in a saucepan on medium heat.
  • Stir constantly until you get a thick, honey-like consistency (it will darken as it cooks and that’s okay). This may take between 10 and 20 minutes depending on the size of your saucepan and how hot your stove gets.
  • Remove from heat and let sit for 20 minutes to thicken up.
  • If it’s too thick, add a tablespoon of water at a time until you get back to the right consistency.
  • Pop your sugar wax in the microwave for 30 seconds to warm it up slightly
  • Grab a popsicle stick and dab a bit of wax on the inside of your wrist.
  • Continue heating the wax in 15-second intervals until it’s soft and spreadable but not hot enough to burn you.
  • Before applying your wax recipe, make sure to clean the area where you would be applying the mixture and allow it to dry.
  • Gently exfoliate to remove dead skin, open the pores, and allow the wax mixture to more deeply penetrate the hair shafts.
  • Working in 2-inch sections, apply wax in the direction of hair growth.
  • Let sit for 5-10 seconds before placing a wax strip on top and smoothing it down gently.
  • Pull the strip off in the opposite direction of the hair growth, being sure to hold the skin underneath taught to lessen the pain.
