Disney’s Newest Movie Is About An Asian Princess, Written By A M’sian Girl

OMG, Disney just made a huge announcement – Their next animated film, Raya and the Last Dragon will be done by Malaysian screenwriter, Adele Lim.

Yes, the same Adele Lim who wrote for Crazy Rich Asians!

A former SMK Sri Aman student, she took to Instagram to share her excitement of the film that she’s been secretly working on for the past year. What an honour!

The Southeast-Asian theme animation is a tale of a “reimagined earth inhabited by an ancient civilisation” set in a realm called Kumandra. There, five clans form the land of the dragon together with the main character, Raya, to find the last dragon, Sisu. Sounds like an epic adventure!

Raya will be voiced by Cassie Steele while Awkwafina, the voice of water dragon, Sisu.

As for the visual, it will be illustrated by Thai storyboard artist, Fawn Veerasunthorn!

The Disney animation will be directed by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellin, who’ve worked on Big Hero 6 and Frozen. Yes, can’t wait for the premiere in 2020. This is definitely one step closer for Disney to feature an actual Malaysian princess!
