Can Herpes Really Make You Blind?
Whoa we just got the news that herpes can make you temporarily blind.
Singer and member of Spice Girls, Mel B. was rushed to the hospital after she was temporarily blinded in her right eye due to a flare-up of herpes. According to a source close to Scary Spice, “It has happened before.”
Previously, Mel B. lost the vision in her right eye due to botched laser surgery. According to People, she’s doing fine at the moment and she’s definitely not blind. Phew.
She was given antiviral drops, which are one of the medications that can help you manage herpes outbreaks. Mel B. will continue touring with her Spice Girls, and we’re glad Scary Spice is back in action.
Herpes is a viral infection that’s easily transmitted via bodily contact, and Mel B’s version is herpes simplex virus type which is mainly transmitted via oral to oral contact and is recurrent.
Technically, you can go blind from herpes, if the bacteria infects your eye.
If you’re worried about herpes (for some reason, now that we know it’s a health scare), it’s probably better to get tested. Herpes spreads through sexual and oral contact, so get yourselves tested, people.
Symptoms include blisters or pain in the genitalia region, fever, cold sores, headaches and chills. However, if a wound on your skin comes in contact with someone who has an open herpes infection, you may get the infection too.
Fortunately, however, herpes can be managed with medication and pain relievers. The best thing to do is to avoid herpes entirely, but it seems pretty difficult considering the fact that you don’t know who has it and outbreaks tend to happen at crowded places – like Coachella back in 2017.
If you find that you could be infected, please seek treatment from your doctor immediately. Herpes can be fatal, and we know that now.
