Brandon Jenner Opens Up About Barely Seeing His Father, Caitlyn Jenner, After Caitlyn Married Kris
The eldest of Caitlyn Jenner’s second marriage, 38-year-old singer Brandon Jenner wrote a piece for the book, To Me, He Was Just Dad – a collection of 40 first-person stories from children with famous fathers. Each of these narratives are “intimate, heartfelt, unvarnished, surprising, and profoundly universal” and, within his piece, Brandon Jenner shares how he had a very distant relationship with the once-“world greatest athlete”. Jenner, 70, married actress Linda Thompson in 1981 before the two time Olympic champion went on to marry now ex-wife Kris Jenner in 1991.
According to Page Six, the younger Jenner says that he barely saw his father. His parents divorced in 1986, so that Caitly could “start transitioning to female (at least that’s what they had discussed),” Brandon wrote. But when Caitlyn began dating Kris, the relationship between his parents turned sour and the young Jenner didn’t see his father “more than half a dozen times between the ages of eight and 25”. He even goes on to say that opportunities for bounding became staged photo ops.
In fact, they were staged photo ops for “family” Christmas cards: me, Brody, Burt and Casey alongside our father. We were one big happy family. For a day.”
He attributes it to the fact that after Caitlyn married Kris, “family” became a business – with the Kardashians building their empire from early on in their marriage. And while Caitlyn appears to be close to her two daughters with Kris, the 22-year-old self-made billionaire Kylie Jenner and supermodel Kendall Jenner, Brandon himself avoided the Kardashian household.
I stayed away for most of my teenage years. I didn’t want to be a part of their dynamic. I know now, though, that Dad was pretty unhappy in that house and felt like he wasn’t treated well.”
Brandon’s younger brother, 36-year-old Brody Jenner, has also previously opened up about their strained relationship with their father. During an episode of The Hills: New Beginnings, he shared that Caitlyn was never around, being there only once every few years.
He wasn’t around for my graduation. He wasn’t around for most of my birthdays. So, yeah, there really wasn’t any relationship. It was very surface. Eventually we started to become closer. And then all of a sudden it was like… I was just getting to know Bruce and then Bruce became Caitlyn.”
Although Brandon’s account of his childhood is a deeper look into the trauma of his childhood, he does go on to say that his relationship with his father has gotten better. They’ve bonded over their shared love of flying and spend their time together doing that.
Divorce is never easy for anyone involved but time does heal a little bit of that pain. It’s good to see them bury the hatchet!
