5 Women Who’ll Make You Want To Flaunt Your Arm Hair

Writer: Farah Karim

The topic about hair is a tangling situation. For many, the only acceptable place where there should be hair for women is on the head and the eyebrows. But on contrary to popular belief, and for those who are unaware (cough, cough) — hair grows everywhere, and sometimes it’s not something that you have control of.

Project #WWHA (Women With Hairy Arms) is challenging the beauty standards by taking professional photoshoots featuring women with visible arm hair. Why? Simply, because they intend to normalise body hair on women, one photoshoot at a time.

Arm hair can be caused by multiple factors from pregnancy, to puberty, polycystic ovarian syndrome and hirsutism. But even then, arm hair is a normal occurrence. Everyone has arm hair one way or another.

But why is there pressure for women to shave their arm hair? As with other hairy areas such as leg, armpit and facial hair, women are subjected to stereotypes that feed into the image of femininity.

Many of my girl friends I know who have visible arm hair feel ashamed by them and proceed to routinely shave them every two weeks or so. Even if they’re not visible unless you specifically pay attention to them, it has become normalised, scrutinised and stereotyped that women should have hairless arms.

In our 2015 shoot entitled “Elegance” which proved that femininity and arm hair are not mutually exclusive, we used red body paint to embolden the appearance of the fine colourless hairs on Rose’s arms to better show them on camera. — A lot of women with dark hair believe that women with light colour body hair never worry about it but in many cases this is not true. Rose had been shaving her arms prior to shooting with us in 2015 because she had the notion even her light hair was unacceptable to be seen. The dress is a one-of-a-kind designed and hand made by @sakhujadesigns in Toronto from Sakhuja's "The 3 Thirsts" Collection. #normalisebodyhair #bodyhairmovement #beautyofbodyhair #wwha #bodyimage #photoshoot #girl #pretty #attractive #beauty #modelling #bodyhair #armhair #armhairdontcare #hairyarms #confidence #selflove #selfacceptance #bodypositive #wrist #peachfuzz #womenwithhairyarms #girlswithhairyarms #bopo #naturalbeauty #noshavenovember #forearmhair

This shouldn’t be the case. What a woman does with her body should be her decision and her decision alone without the input of societal expectations weighing on her shoulder. I mean, you wouldn’t ask a guy about their hairy arms, right?

So if you have arm hair, don’t be afraid to flaunt it. Do whatever empowers you cause at the end of the day, it’s your arm hair and no one can tell you what to do with it.
