A Look At The 67th Miss Universe National Costume & Evening Gown

Yesterday, Miss Universe Malaysia has unveiled the much-anticipated ‘Bangau Perahu’ National Costume, Evening Gown as well as National Gift for Jane Teoh to wear at the 67th Miss Universe installment, which is set to take place in Bangkok. Thailand later this year.

The unique ‘Bangau Perahu’ National Costume (which pretty much looks like a Wonder Woman suit, btw) is based on an artistic interpretation of traditional Malay craftsmanship by designer Salleh Hamid, who graduated with a degree in Fashion Design from UITM and established his eponymous label in 2011.

He is also known for designing outfits for London Modest Live Show (April & May 2018), Winter Olympics Closing Pyeong Chang South Korea (March 2018), Bahrain Grand Show (Feb 2018) and more.

The designer spent six months creating the National Costume inspired by boat’s crane or sail guard, commonly seen on traditional fishing boats, and the Malay art of “Awan Larat” usually seen in carvings.

It features a corset shaped armour laden with wood carving, displaying a 3D element of “okok” on the shoulder which resembles the front of a boat, while the playful shimmer of the skirt was inspired by the glistening sea water. To complement the attire, a blue warrior-like custom-made boots were made by Rhea Tan.

Meanwhile, the stunning silver evening gown was designed by Amaze, designer duo from Shah Alam, Amar Madfie and Zeed Jameel, who have appeared on numerous TV shows and magazines. For television shows, Amaze have been featured on HLive!, Ramadhan 2014, Muzika Ekstravaganza and many more.

Whereas for magazines, they have been featured in Hijabista, Pengantin, Nona, WW, Glam Weddings, and In Trend for the fashion spread as well as covers.

The sensual yet regal silver beaded gown was painstakingly sewn to perfection in order to accentuate Jane’s best asset – her shoulders.

Inspired by the architecture and structural lines of Seri Wawasan Bridge in Putrajaya, the off shoulder bodice is designed with a soft draping and a mermaid-cut silhouette which showcases rows of hand-sewn embellishment and intricate beadwork.

All in all, we love the outfits for this year’s competition. To know more about Miss Universe Malaysia, simply head over to the official website.
