5 Vintage & Thrift Stores On Instagram For You To Shop Sustainable

Malaysian’s fabric waste in 2018 was the weight of 19 Eiffel Towers (that’s 19 x 10,100 tons). It accounted for 6.3% of the 3.1 million tonnes of solid waste that was collected that year. Fast fashion is the reason that this is possible – people are more concerned about being “in trend” than what the effect of swapping out clothes so many times year is. And the environmental impact of fast fashion does not just stop at the tonnes of waste that is produced, the fashion industry produces 10% of all humanity’s carbon emissions, is the second-largest consumer of the world’s water supply, and pollutes the oceans with microplastics. And until very recently, Malaysians played a large role in the consumption of fast fashion, as we obsessed over the “newest new” and international logos.

However, Instagram has changed the game for fashion here in Malaysia. Vintage stores like Okgo have made a name for themselves by building on their hipster, clean-cut aesthetic that seems to be taking the thrift world by storm. People are finding the joy in bundle (thrift) shopping. There’s just something about finding a really cute piece or full outfit for under RM50! As we spend more time indoors now, take a look at how the earth is thriving from this momentary pause – the sky is clearer and nature is finding ways to repair what damage we’ve done. Why not do your part by shopping sustainably – these stores prove that thrift shopping will be more rewarding, affordable and environmentally friendly –
